Pro tip: a soft proof on my $30 thrift store monitor beat my fancy 4K for spotting bad yellows
Last month I had a client job with a big yellow field and the 4K monitor at my desk showed it as clean and bright. Out of laziness I pulled the file up on an old 1080p screen I got at a garage sale in Toledo for $30, and the yellow showed banding and a green shift right away. I switched my soft proof to that cheap screen and fixed the file in about 20 minutes. Turns out the $30 panel was closer to the actual print than the fancy one, mostly because the fancy one is set so bright. What cheap gear has anyone else found that beats the pricey stuff for checking color?
