Printed 500 brochures in RGB and watched them all turn to mud

Last quarter I designed a batch of brochures for a trade show in Chicago. I did everything in RGB like I always do because the screen looked perfect. When the box of 500 showed up the blues were purple and the greens looked like dirty dishwater. I ran a side by side test with the same file converted to CMYK before sending it back to the printer. The CMYK version came out way closer to what I saw on screen even if it was a bit duller. Has anyone else had a print job go totally sideways because you forgot to switch modes?

Did you proof the CMYK conversion or just assume it'd match?

Ugh, I feel that one. "Just assume it'd match" is basically a prayer for a color disaster.
