A prepress guy in Reno looked at my file for two seconds and said "your blacks are rich, that's the problem"
I sent a 24 page booklet to print last spring and the blacks came back looking like dark gray mud, flat and lifeless on every photo. He pulled it up and pointed at the numbers: I had 60/40/40/100 on my blacks instead of a single K, so the press was laying down way too much ink and the whole thing washed out. I switched all my body black to just K and kept rich black only for big solid fills, and the next run came out deep and clean. Now I check my swatches before every export instead of trusting what my monitor shows me. What's your rule for rich black versus plain K on small type?
