I finally had a stranger explain why my cardboard prototype of a toaster felt wrong

I was at a maker space in Denver last month showing someone my rough toaster mockup made from cereal boxes. This older guy walked over and just pointed at the handle area. He said 'your thumb is gonna hate you after three uses'. He was right. I had the handle flush with the side with no clearance for fingers. Spent ten minutes watching him sketch finger relief on the cardboard with a ballpoint pen. Has anyone else had a random person give feedback that totally changed their design direction?

Man, that's the kind of feedback you can't pay for. Ngl the best design advice I ever got was from a stranger with zero stake in the project.

Got a great tip from a guy at a bus stop once. Changed my whole approach.
