Someone at the hardware store said my mockup looked like a mail sorter, not a phone holder, and they were right. I redrew the slot angle and it actually holds the phone now. Anyone else get better feedback from strangers than from the people you ask directly?

Bought a $60 foam cutter, used it twice, back to exacto knives

I saw all these cool cardboard builds online with perfect curves so I grabbed a hot wire foam cutter thinking it would speed things up. Spent $60 on it last month, first cut melted the wire because I pushed too slow, second attempt left this burnt plastic smell in my garage for two days. Now I'm back to my $8 exacto and honestly the corners look cleaner. Is a pro setup really worth it or do most of you just stick to hand cutting too?

Taped a tape measure to my cardboard rig after 3 failed door frames

Ngl, I kept cutting foam board door frames too small because I eyeballed the measurements. So I grabbed a $4 fiberglass tape from Harbor Freight and taped it straight onto my workbench cardboard template. Now I just lay the piece on top and cut, no more guessing. Has anyone else hacked their mockup setup with something this dumb but effective?

I finally had a stranger explain why my cardboard prototype of a toaster felt wrong

I was at a maker space in Denver last month showing someone my rough toaster mockup made from cereal boxes. This older guy walked over and just pointed at the handle area. He said 'your thumb is gonna hate you after three uses'. He was right. I had the handle flush with the side with no clearance for fingers. Tbh I always thought tape was fine until I tried his way on a shelf prototype last weekend. The hot glue held the joints way steadier and I could actually test if the weight distribution worked. Anyone else swap out tape for something else on mockups?

My cardboard sign holder collapsed at a craft fair in Austin

Set up my booth last Saturday at the Austin Flea. Had this fancy acrylic sign holder for my pricing. Looked clean. Third customer bumped the table, sign holder tipped, cracked. Swear I saw a vendor next to me smirk. She had a cardboard prototype. Taped, folded, ugly as sin. But that thing stayed upright through two hours of wind and a kid running into her table. Got me thinking. I built my own cardboard sign holder that night. Three pieces, some hot glue, notched together. Tested it by shaking my workbench for a solid minute. Rock solid. Going to run it at the next market and see how it holds up. Anyone ever swapped a 'professional' display for a cardboard version?

Spent 4 hours building a cardboard treadmill UI before realizing the user panel was upside down

I was trying to copy the layout from the real treadmill I had sitting next to me. Took photos, measured distances, cut everything out just right. Showed it to my wife and she goes "why are the buttons on the bottom?". Looked at the real treadmill again. The control panel is literally mounted on top of the handles. My cardboard mockup of a spice rack collapsed 3 different times before I got it right

I was in my garage last Thursday trying to figure out how to fit 12 spice jars in a vertical rack without them tipping over. My third cardboard version had the slots too shallow and the whole thing buckled when I set a jar in the top row. I ended up cutting the angle of the base at 15 degrees and gluing a cardboard lip on the front edge. That held steady with all 12 jars on it plus one heavy olive oil bottle. Has anyone else had to scrap more than 5 cardboard prototypes before landing on a working design?

Swapped my foam core board for corrugated cardboard on a wallet mockup

I spent years using foam core for quick wallet prototypes, you know the kind where you check stitch lines and pocket depths. Then about 6 months ago I grabbed a piece of corrugated from a shipping box because I was out of foam core. The corrugated actually held up better to repeated folding and punching with my awl, plus it cost nothing. Foam core always crumbled at the edges after a few open-close cycles, but the cardboard just dented and kept going. I ended up finishing the whole design in cardboard before cutting real leather, saved maybe 3 hours of rework. Anyone else have a material swap that just clicked better for you?

Shoutout to the cardboard mockup that fell apart mid-test

I was working on a bookshelf design last Saturday and built a quick cardboard prototype to check the angles. I thought I had it all figured out, but when I set it on the floor to test stability, the whole thing collapsed sideways after about 30 seconds. It wasn't even a heavy load, just a couple of empty binders. I realized then that my side supports were way too flimsy and I had cut the slots too shallow. Instead of getting mad, I grabbed more scraps and rebuilt it with thicker walls and deeper notches. That second version held fine, even with four heavy textbooks. Has anyone else had a cardboard prototype teach you something your drawings missed?

Gluing foamcore with hot glue felt sketchy but it's way stronger than I thought

I was sure rubber cement was the only way for clean models, but after 3 mockups the hot glue joints held up to me dropping the whole thing off my desk... my last rubber cement one fell apart in my bag. Anyone else switch methods and find something that surprised them?

I was making a cardboard prototype for a new kitchen island. Had to choose between a solid single piece of corrugated or taping two smaller ones together. Picked the taped version to save time. Just realized my cardboard mockup of a spice rack was completely wrong after 2 hours at IKEA

I spent last Saturday building what I thought was a perfect cardboard prototype for a wall-mounted spice rack, brought it to IKEA to test the dimensions against their jars, and every single bottle was too tall by at least an inch. The thing looked fine on my kitchen counter at home but failed hard in real-world conditions. Has anyone else had a cardboard prototype fall apart when you actually took it somewhere to test?
