Cardboard mockup won me over after my 3D render kept lying to me
I spent 2 weeks perfecting a CAD model of my phone stand, then taped together a cereal box version in 20 minutes and realized the whole angle was off, so now I'm sketching every idea in cardboard first, anyone else find that physical prototypes expose flaws the screen just hides?

Cardboard is basically the fastest way to catch stupid problems that your brain just ignores on a screen. The render shows you what you want to see, the cardboard shows you what your hand actually does when it grabs the thing. Also, the cheap material forces you to simplify, which is usually the fix for whatever overcomplicated mess you were building in CAD anyway. Once you start mocking up everything, you'll find yourself skipping whole design steps because the physical version just tells you the answer in five minutes. That's a skill no software can give you.
