Burned $85 building a cardboard couch mockup before checking if it would fit through my door
I spent a full Saturday cutting and taping a 1:1 cardboard model of a couch I wanted to build, and I used about $85 worth of heavy double wall sheets from a shop in Grand Rapids. Got the mockup all done in my living room, felt great about it, then realized the thing was 4 inches too wide to get through my hallway door. How do you all check clearances before you start cutting, do you build a small scale model first or just measure the route?
Measured the whole path with a tape and a piece of scrap ply cut to the couch width after I wasted a weekend on something similar. I used to figure eyeballing it was good enough, but that burned me once and I'm done with it. Now I walk the route with that plywood gauge and check every door, turn, and stair rail before anything gets cut. Saves way more time than it costs, and cardboard isn't cheap either.
