Update: I switched to a cheap gel pen for my weekly spreads and my handwriting actually got neater.

I grabbed a pack of those basic 50 cent pens from the office supply store because my fancy one ran out, and after two weeks of using them, my letters are way more consistent, which makes me wonder if smoother ink flow matters more than pen price.

Disagree on the ink flow thing. My handwriting gets sloppy with cheap pens because they skip or blob. I used a basic ballpoint last month and my notes looked messy, like the letters were shaky. A slightly nicer pen gives me more control without being fancy. Maybe it's just how your hand adjusts to different grips.

Ever try a gel pen instead?

Oh man, I totally get where you're coming from, but I have the opposite problem. I mean, if a pen is too smooth it makes me write way too fast and then it's just a scribble. Give me a cheap, kinda scratchy ballpoint any day, it forces me to slow down. My handwriting is actually neater when the pen fights me a little bit. Maybe my hand is just weird like that.
