Just realized my index took me 6 months to get right, and it was one line in the key
When I started my first journal back in 2018, I made the index way too complicated with sub categories and page ranges, and it took me until about March to figure out why I never used it. The fix was printing the month on one line at the top of each page spread so I could find things fast. Six months of flipping around for nothing, and now the index is the easiest part of the whole setup. Did anyone else overbuild their index at first?
Keep the index simple, just a few top-level buckets you actually use. Adding a second color of ink for the current month's entries saves a ton of flipping too.
