Update: I've been teaching new players Catan wrong for like 5 years

I was explaining the robber to my cousin last week and said you just block the hex and steal a card, which is what I've always done. She read the actual rulebook and pointed out you're supposed to roll a 7 *before* moving the robber, not after placing it. My whole group has been playing it backwards this whole time. How many other basic rules have we all probably messed up?

Check if you've been handling development cards wrong too. The timing for playing them gets a lot of people, like playing a knight after the dice roll. That one always causes arguments at our table.

Spot something @nina834 said that's super key. People fight over playing knights after the dice roll, but the real sneaky rule is about buying and playing in the same turn. You can buy a card, but you can't play it right away, not even a victory point. That means you can't win the game with a victory point card you just bought. Forgetting that has totally changed who won in my games. It forces you to plan a turn ahead, which a lot of new players miss completely.
