Unpopular take: Gloomhaven's campaign beats Jaws of the Lion for new players, and the setup time argument is overblown
Everyone in my group at the Columbus board game cafe keeps pushing Jaws of the Lion on new folks because of the shorter setup, but I ran both with three different new players over the past two months and the full Gloomhaven campaign hooked all of them harder. Jaws feels like a tutorial that ends right when you're getting invested, while the big box gives you that map you keep unfolding for weeks. Our Tuesday group of 4 finished scenario 14 last week and nobody has asked to switch back. Am I wrong here, or does the slow build actually work better for keeping a group together?
