The vibe at my local game store totally shifted in like a year

I mean, a year ago it was just a chill spot where a few of us would meet up for casual games of Carcassonne or Ticket to Ride. Now it's all about these super competitive tournaments for games I've never even heard of, and the regulars just talk about their rankings. Did the pandemic just turn everyone into hardcore strategy gamers or what?

Yeah, saw a whole thread about this on another forum last week. The theory was that a lot of people got deep into complex games online during lockdowns and now they're taking that energy out into the real world. It creates a totally different feel in a store when the main goal shifts from hanging out to winning points. Makes it hard to just drop in for a relaxed game anymore.

Totally get what you mean. It feels like the whole vibe changed overnight. You just want a chill place to play some cards and talk, but now it's all about the meta and being super competitive. Kinda misses the point of getting together in person. Really takes the fun out of it when everyone is treating a casual night like a pro tournament.
