My friend's dice tower advice was dead wrong, and it cost me a tournament round

Back in March at the Salt Lake City game con, my buddy swore by a felt-lined dice tower for reducing crazy rolls. I built one from scrap wood, and my dice bounced so wild they left the tray twice in 3 throws. Turns out he had a misaligned inner ramp for 2 years and never noticed. Has anyone else gotten stubborn advice that just made things worse, or was it just me?

Ditch the tower, roll straight into a flat tray. Fixed everything for me.
