My friend Mark told me my game explanations are a total mess

We were trying to play Root at my place last month and I spent like 20 minutes just talking about the rules before we even started. Mark straight up said, 'Dude, you're giving us the whole history book, just tell us how to win.' It hit me hard. Now I try to explain the goal first, then the basic turn, and only the rules you need right away. Anyone else get told their teach is too much?

Riley58 is totally right about starting with the win condition. I used to do the same thing, giving a full lecture before anyone touched a piece. My group got so lost during a Scythe teach that they just started zoning out. Now I just say "you win by having the most money, here's how you get money on your turn" and build from there. It's way less stressful for everyone.

Start with the win condition every time.

Wait, you taught Scythe without saying how to win first? How did you even start explaining anything? I would have been so lost as a player. That game has so many pieces moving at once, I can't imagine jumping in blind. Starting with the money thing makes so much sense, it gives all the little actions a point right away. I need to try this next time I teach a big game.
