Just found out the first print run of my favorite game was only 500 copies

I was reading an old interview with the designer on a blog called 'Game History Corner' and it made me realize how lucky I am to own one.

Oh man, that reminds me of my buddy who found a first print of a super obscure RPG at a garage sale for two bucks. He didn't even know what he had till he looked it up later.

Isn't rarity more about the game itself than how many copies exist?

Totally disagree! Rarity is about supply, not the game's quality. A bad game with few copies is still rare, it just isn't valuable. You're mixing up two different things.
