Hot take: playing Root with 4 players beats playing it with 2, and it is not even close
I tried Root with just my wife for about 6 games and it felt like moving pieces around a spreadsheet. Last Friday I brought it to game night at my place in Austin and we had 4 players, and the whole table came alive. The alliances and backstabbing in a 4 player game are the entire point, while 2 players just turns into a math problem with no table talk. Same thing with my copy of Dune Imperium, the 2 player mode is fine but it is missing that tension you only get when 3 or 4 people are all racing for the same spice. I get that it is hard to get a group together but I would rather wait 2 weeks than play a watered down version. Does anyone here actually prefer 2 player Root, and if so what am I missing?
