Can we talk about the fact that Monopoly was originally designed to teach people that land grabbing is bad?
I was reading a book about old board games last month and found out Monopoly started as a teaching tool called The Landlord's Game. A woman named Elizabeth Magie patented it in 1904 to show how renting and owning property makes the rich richer and everyone else poorer. Parker Brothers bought the rights in 1935 and flipped the whole message into a game about crushing your friends with hotels on Boardwalk. I sat there kinda stunned because I have played this game since I was like 8 years old and never once thought about what it was trying to say. It also made me wonder how many other games I grew up with have a whole backstory I completely missed. Did anyone else know about the real history of this one, or am I just late to the party?
