Unpopular opinion: a 78 year old at the DMV made me rethink every form I've ever designed
I was stuck at the DMV in Mesa last Tuesday for 2 hours and the lady next to me, 78 years old, asked me to read the renewal form out loud because the print was too small. She said "honey, I can push a button, you just have to tell me what button does what." I design checkout screens for a living and it hit me that I obsess over button colors and hover states while people just want the words to be big enough to see. She filled out the whole thing in 4 minutes once I read it to her. We spent $12,000 on user testing last quarter and nobody on my team ever tested with anyone over 65. Now I'm wondering if our whole signup flow is just a blurry form to half our users. Has anyone else tried just making the text bigger before redesigning anything?
