Told to stop using drop shadows and it backfired hard

A designer I respect said flat UI was the future and drop shadows were lazy. I took their advice and redesigned my whole app interface with zero depth cues. Users couldn't tell which buttons were clickable anymore and my click-through rate dropped 40 percent in 3 weeks. I spent a weekend adding back subtle shadows and the numbers recovered within 5 days. The person gave that advice in good faith but for my particular audience it just didn't work. Has anyone else followed popular design advice only to see real metrics tank?

Oh man, that's the perfect example of why "design rules" are really just guidelines at best. Flat design works great for some products but flops hard when your users need clear affordances to navigate.

I've got a buddy who runs a small e-commerce shop and he went full flat design on his site last year. His bounce rate shot up like 40% because people couldn't tell what was clickable anymore, especially on product images. He had to go back and add subtle shadows and hover effects before his sales recovered. It's wild how something that looks clean can totally tank your usability.
