The thermostat in my rental flips to 88 overnight and I finally found why
has anyone else dealt with hidden override modes like this?

Wait, is it possible the landlord set that hidden override so the A/C kicks on during peak utility pricing hours and then shuts off later to save their own bill? I noticed my old apartment did something similar at 4am, not 88 degrees, but it clearly reset to a different schedule on weekends. The sneaky part is these overrides usually hide in the service manual, not the user settings. If you flip to the installer menu, you might find a timer or a demand response lock that the property owner enabled. It feels less like a glitch and more like a cost-saving hack on their end, especially if your lease says you pay the electric bill.
