A/B tested my checkout flow against a paper form, paper won by 2 minutes

I set up a simple test at a local market stall in Austin last Saturday. Customers using my tablet checkout averaged 4 minutes, but the handwritten receipt pad was done in 2. I think the tablet's 6-step process with pop-ups just made people second-guess themselves. Has anyone else found that adding more tech actually slows things down?

The part about people second guessing themselves with the tablet really hit home. Last month I tried to order a taco from a place that had one of those self service kiosks. It asked me if I wanted to add guacamole like five different times, then asked me to tip before I even saw the total. I stood there so long the guy behind the counter just shouted my order over to the kitchen. Paper menus still work fine, and I think we all just accept that some things dont need an upgrade. Matching that 2 minute handwritten receipt is impressive though, that stall owner should just sell the system.
