PSA: a logo with no words beats a bad name 9 times out of 10
Everyone in here says a logo needs the business name in it to work, and I think that advice is flat wrong. Two months ago I did two mockups for a barber in Fresno, one with his full name in a script font and one with just a pair of scissors built from the letter F. He picked the text one at first because he thought a symbol alone would confuse people. I put the mark-only version on his window and his van for three weeks anyway, and he got 5 people asking about it by name before any of them saw a single card. I know that sounds backwards, but the wordy version was so cramped at small sizes it looked like a smudge. If your name is long or hard to read, why force it into the mark at all? Has anyone here talked a client out of the name-in-the-logo thing, and how did you do it?
A buddy of mine ran into the same thing with a coffee shop, long name, and the owner swore up and down that dropping the words would kill his brand. He put the symbol alone on the cups for a month and nobody batted an eye, sales were the same. Turns out people care way more about a mark they can actually see than reading some tiny script while they're driving past.
