My kid's soccer league asked me to fix their logo and I made it worse in front of 40 parents
So my daughter plays for the Riverside Rapids under 10 team here in Grand Rapids. Last Wednesday the league lady caught me at pickup and asked if I could clean up the team logo since I do "computer stuff." The original was this clip art wave with a soccer ball on top, real rough, stretched out and blurry on every banner. I figured easy job, spent about two hours making the wave smoother and swapping the font. Showed up Thursday to the parent meeting thinking I nailed it. Then a dad raises his hand and points out I put the wave going the wrong direction, so now it looks like a giant blue frown behind the ball. Forty parents just staring at the projector. I tried to play it cool but my face went hot. I fixed it by Saturday morning but now I need backup. Does anyone here have a checklist for checking logos on a big screen before you show a whole room of people?
The part about forty parents just staring at the projector got me, because I read a thing once about how people judge a logo from across a room way before they ever see it up close. Small details like which way a wave curls totally vanish at that distance, but the overall shape still reads. A frown is a frown from fifty feet, you know? What that article said to do is shrink your logo down to like the size of a stamp and squint at it, or better yet flip it upside down, because your brain stops filling in what it expects and just sees the shape. Also test it in straight black and white with no color, since colors trick your eyes into liking stuff that's actually lopsided. Do those checks on your laptop with the brightness all the way down too, because projectors wash everything out compared to a monitor.
