Hot take: my logo looked fine at 400px so I skipped a small size test, then it fell apart as a 32px favicon for 6 weeks
Back in March I finished a bakery logo, a little wheat stalk curling out of a rolling pin, and I thought it was clean. It looked great on my screen at 400px and on the client's printed menu, so I sent it off and moved on. Then the web guy put it in the browser tab at 32px and it turned into a gray smudge, because the stem was one pixel wide and the grain lines all merged together. I told myself I would fix it in a day, but it took me 6 weeks of redrawing and squinting at my monitor from across the room to get it readable small. What finally worked was cutting the wheat down to 5 chunky shapes and thickening the stem to 3px, which hurt because the big version lost some charm. Now my rule is to zoom out until the logo is thumbnail size, walk 5 feet back, and if I can't tell what it is I start over. My client was cool about it but I ate the extra hours, around 11 of them, which stung. Does anybody here have a trick for keeping details alive at tiny sizes, or do you just simplify until it looks boring up close?
