Spent 3 years cold calling agencies to pitch my design work, then a guy in Baltimore said one thing that flipped it
I stopped pitching my services and started pitching a specific fix to a specific problem they already had, and my close rate jumped from about 1 in 30 calls to 4 out of 10, so now I'm wondering if anyone else made that switch and how long it took before the old spray and pray habit finally died off.
Man, I have to push back on this because I think you got lucky with timing more than anything. Going from 1 in 30 to 4 out of 10 is a crazy jump and there are a TON of other things that could explain it, like maybe those Baltimore agencies were already shopping around or your list got better over 3 years. Plus the whole "pitch a specific fix" thing only works if you actually know what their problem is, and most cold callers are guessing, so you end up just pitching a different flavor of the same guessing game. I would also say the spray and pray habit doesn't really "die off" for most people, they just swap one script for another and keep dialing, and if the numbers dip again they go right back to old habits. This feels less like a magic switch and more like you finally hit a market that was ready to buy.
