Had a chat with a 20 year agency vet that shook up my pricing

I was at a networking meetup in Austin last Tuesday and ended up talking to this guy who runs a small branding agency. He told me he charges $5,000 for a logo package that I usually price at $800. I asked how and he said he just started saying no to cheap clients and raised his rates every quarter until people stopped calling. It hit different because I've been scared to lose work but he showed me his books and he actually makes more now with half the clients. I'm thinking about trying a 20% hike next month for new projects just to see what happens. Has anyone else here done a big jump on pricing and not regretted it?

Yeah man that tracks, once you stop chasing the wrong clients you start actually making real money.

Around how many bad clients did it take before you finally got the message? In my experience, it was around the 4th or 5th one that finally clicked for me. They all paid late or wanted way too many revisions for the price. That's when I started asking for half upfront and stuck to a strict scope of work.
