A guy at the Austin coffee shop asked what I do, and my 5 word answer landed me a $3,200 job
I was just grabbing a latte before a meeting and he heard me say I run a small ad agency, turned out he needed help with his gym's ads. Made me realize I should stop mumbling about what I do and just say it plain, anyone else stumble into work this way?
Timing matters more than the words themselves. Saying "I run an ad agency" while someone's standing in line with nothing to do hits different than saying it at a networking event where everyone's pitching. That coffee shop thing worked because he was bored and you were the most interesting thing in the room for 30 seconds. Same five words at a crowded mixer and he'd nod and walk off. The real trick is catching people when they've got dead time, not just having a clean answer.
