My grandpa's toolbox had a 1903 stamp but the style was 1910s. I hit the county historical society and showed them pictures of the tool markings. The old librarian pulled fire insurance maps from 1905 that showed the building before a renovation. Sometimes the date on the thing is when it was made, not when the photo was taken. Took me three trips to figure out his shop changed addresses in 1908.

Hold on, the date on the photo might not even be wrong or about the photo itself. What if that 1920 date is actually when the print was made from the original negative, not when the picture was taken? Back then people would reprint old negatives for years, especially if they had a favorite shot or if the original got damaged and they wanted a fresh copy. That would explain why the style of the buildings or people in it don't match anything from 1920, because the photo could be from 1905 or even earlier and just got reprinted later. You'd have to look at the paper it's printed on or the back of the photo for clues about that.
