Vinegar fizzed on my garden rock and revealed its true form
Always assumed those pale stones were boring quartz pieces. Grabbed some vinegar from the kitchen and gave one a quick drip. The CRAZY fizz proved it was limestone, which explains my soil type. Now I bring a tiny bottle on walks for fast checks. This BASIC trick made rock hunting way more fun for me.

Worry your vinegar test might be too simple. Other minerals like calcite fizz with acid too. Dolomite can also react, so it's not a sure thing. Try using a hardness test with common items for better checks. Rock hunting is great, but don't trust just one trick.

Fair point. That vinegar trick is basically a party trick for rocks. I grabbed a piece of marble tile from my garage and it fizzed like crazy, but so did some limestone gravel. The hardness test is way more useful. If you can scratch it with a penny but not a fingernail, you're in a certain range. Saves a lot of guesswork. Rock people get way too excited about vinegar.
