Tbh, my brother keeps using the wrong sandpaper grit on our family heirloom chair. How do I handle this without starting a fight?

Let him figure it out on his own, the chair isn't that fragile. He might actually know what he's doing.

Yeah, because nothing says "I know what I'm doing" like the sound of 40-grit sandpaper on antique wood. Linda368, I admire your faith in humanity, but I've seen people try to "figure out" refinishing. It usually ends with a trip to the hardware store for wood filler and a sad story. Letting him guess is how you get a chair that feels like a cat's tongue. A quick tip on sandpaper grits isn't micromanaging, it's just saving the poor chair from an itchy future.

@linda368's idea to let him figure it out sounds good, but my friend tried that with her sibling. Her brother used coarse sandpaper on a old cabinet and it left visible scratches. I'd say nicely show him the correct grit to keep the chair safe.
