My neighbor's offhand comment about his 'real job' made me snap
We were talking about weekend plans and he said, 'Must be nice to just make your own schedule, but I need a real job for the security.' I've heard that before, but this time I actually ran the numbers. My freelance income has been over $85,000 for the past two years, which is more than his salary. The 'security' he talks about is an illusion if you're good at what you do and manage your money. It hit different because it made me realize how much I've built something solid that others just don't get. What's the most annoying thing someone has said to you about freelancing?

I used to think that way too until I saw my own bank account.

Look at my bank account and tell me it's not just a sad number getting smaller every month, @troycarter. Honestly, mine looks like it's on a diet it never agreed to. I open the app and it's just a race to see which bill wins the "who can empty it first" game this time.

Notice how everything feels designed to make that number drop. Groceries, gas, even a basic phone plan, it all adds up before you even blink. Feels like the goalposts for "getting by" keep moving further away each year. Troy's right, seeing the real damage changes your whole outlook on how the system works. You stop blaming yourself and start seeing the bigger picture of constant, quiet pressure.
