My lawyer friend said to always put a kill fee in my contracts. I didn't listen.

He told me this two years ago when I started my freelance copywriting business. I thought it made me look greedy, so I skipped it. Last month, a client ghosted me halfway through a $3,500 website project after I'd already done 30 hours of work. I had no way to get paid for that time because my contract only paid on final delivery. Now I'm out over a grand and learned the hard way. Has anyone else had to add a kill fee clause after getting burned?

That's a brutal way to learn, but man, it sticks with you. I got burned on a video edit for a grand before I wised up. Now my kill fee is 50% for any work started, no exceptions. It just saves the headache.

My first big freelance project taught me the same hard lesson.

Yeah, that first big project hits you like a truck, doesn't it? Honestly, you learn so much from just getting through it. Tbh, it's a rough way to figure things out.
