A client in Dallas tried to pay me with a 'promise' instead of cash last month. That whole week was a legal mess.

Seriously? A whole legal mess over one bad check? That feels like a major overreaction. People flake on payments all the time, it's just part of doing business. You send a few stern emails, maybe a demand letter, and move on. Calling it a legal disaster for your whole week sounds a bit dramatic for what was probably just an annoying client.

Oh come on, a bad check is way different than just being late with a payment. You can send all the stern emails you want but that doesn't get your money back. The bank fees alone can be brutal, plus the time wasted chasing someone down who already showed they don't care. It's not dramatic to call it a legal mess when you have to hire a lawyer or go to small claims court just to get what you're owed. People who write bad checks know exactly what they're doing, it's not some innocent mistake most of the time. A demand letter doesn't mean squat if the person has no intention of paying.

Bad checks can actually be a big deal, they're not just flaking. It's fraud, and the bank fees and time lost add up fast. Ever had to deal with the fallout yourself?
