Tried using a standard propane torch versus a forced-air burner for drying out a sand mold core box. The difference was about 15 minutes versus 3.

Man, you're not kidding. I tried to thaw a frozen pipe under my house with a hair dryer once. Spent an hour just making the crawl space damp. Grabbed a proper torpedo heater and had steam coming off the thing in maybe ten minutes. It's crazy how a weak heat source can almost make things worse, right? You just end up cooking the air instead of the actual problem.

That reminds me of trying to dry out firewood in a damp shed one winter... a couple space heaters just made the whole place feel clammy. Ended up renting one of those big industrial dehumidifiers and it pulled gallons of water out of the air in a day. Sometimes you just need way more power than seems reasonable.

We had a similar thing happen with a stubborn paint job on a steel door. A regular heat gun took forever, just pushing moisture around. Borrowed a buddy's high-power infrared heater and it was bone dry in a quarter of the time. The right tool for the job really does make all the difference, even if it seems like overkill at first.
