Talked to my kid's teacher at career day and she asked why we still pour metal into sand

I was showing my daughter's class some old sand castings I brought in, and her teacher said, 'It's amazing this is still how we make things.' She wasn't being rude, just curious. But it hit me that most people have no clue what we do or how skilled it is. Made me realize we don't talk about our trade enough outside the shop. How do you guys explain what you do to people who've never seen a foundry?

What kind of things did you bring in to show them? I usually grab a raw casting and a finished machined part to show the before and after. It helps people see the starting point.

My buddy brought a raw forging and the final polished gear to his kid's class. The teacher said the kids loved holding the heavy, rough piece first, then passing around the smooth, shiny gear. It made the whole process click for them, kind of like what you do with the casting, @olivia_barnes97. He said the weight difference alone got a big reaction.
