My foreman told me to try a 2% nickel addition on our gray iron for the new gear housings.
I was skeptical, but we ran a small batch last Tuesday and the machinability jumped way up. What other small alloy tweaks have you guys tried for specific castings?

I mean, nickel's expensive but sometimes you just need the right tool for the job. That machinability jump is real and can save way more in shop time than the alloy costs. It's not always about the cheapest tweak.

But what's the actual time saved per part?

Honestly, nickel can get pricey fast. We've had better luck just bumping up the copper a little for machinability on our end.
