Unpopular opinion: I used to think you had to pick fonts from the same family to make them work
I mean, for like two years I'd only pair Arial with Arial Black or something, thinking it was the safe choice. Then I saw a poster in a Seattle cafe that mixed a really thin serif with a chunky, rounded sans serif and it just clicked. Now I spend maybe 20 minutes just looking for weird combos that feel right together, not just similar. Has anyone else found a pairing that broke all their old rules?

Consider how @wrenh79's orange pillow works like a bold font accent.

Oh man, that's so true. I got stuck on that same rule with home decor colors for ages. Finally just threw a bright orange pillow on a grey couch and it just worked. Sometimes the weird match is the good one.

That Seattle cafe poster sounds exactly like my turning point too. I get what @morgan_jenkins90 means, it's like finding the right weird accent color. My go-to now is pairing this super tall font with a short, wide one.
