I swore off pairing serif fonts for logos until a project in Austin last month made me try it again.

The client's vintage barbershop sign looked flat with just a geometric sans, but adding a bold slab serif for the name gave it the classic weight it needed, so what other serif and sans combos have worked for you on a tight branding job?

That's a cool fix for the barbershop sign. What was the specific slab serif you ended up using? I'm always looking for ones that feel heavy but not too stiff.

Rockwell is solid but I lean toward Memphis. It has that same heavy footprint but the little extra curves keep it from looking like a brick wall. I tried Rockwell on a sign once and it came out too blocky for my taste. Memphis just feels more relaxed without losing that weight. Give it a shot if you want something that sits heavy but still breathes a little.

Honestly went with Rockwell after trying like five others that felt like bricks. Tbh the struggle to find a heavy but chill slab is too real.
