I just realized I was pairing fonts based on their names, not their actual shapes, for like 5 years. A friend pointed it out when my 'modern' design looked off.

Remember a buddy who kept using Papyrus for everything because he liked the name. He finally showed his work to a designer who just stared at it and asked why he was using a font that looked like a fake Egyptian relic. It was a real eye opener about judging by sight, not sound.

Oh man, that's such an easy trap to fall into. I used to think "Comic Sans" sounded fun and casual, so I'd slap it on anything that wasn't serious. Then I actually looked at it on a flyer and it just screamed "child's birthday party," not "neighborhood cookout." You really have to see the letters together on the page, not just hear the name.
