I dropped $80 on a font pairing guidebook and it was a huge waste...

Everyone online says you need a reference book to get good at matching typefaces. I bought one last month, and every single combo in it looks super dated, like it was made for a 2010 corporate website. It just doesn't fit the modern stuff I'm designing now. Has anyone else bought a book or guide that felt totally out of touch?

dated" just means you're ignoring classic, timeless rules.

I used to agree with the "timeless rules" idea, but that guidebook changed my mind. Seeing those stale combos on the page made it clear. The rules from ten years ago just don't help with what looks good now. It feels like trying to use an old map for a new city.
