Pro tip: check your cooler's drain line before you get a flood

I almost had a real mess last week... my walk in cooler started leaking water onto the floor. I thought the unit was broken and called a repair guy. He came out, looked around for maybe ten minutes, and found the drain line was totally clogged with gunk from old flowers and leaves. He cleared it with a special brush and some hot water. The whole thing cost me $150 for the service call, which hurt, but it saved me from a huge water bill and ruined stock. Now I'm adding 'check and flush the drain' to my weekly clean up list. Has anyone found a good schedule or tool for keeping those lines clear?

Yeah I saw a video where a guy just uses a shop vac on the drain line every few months. Seems like a cheap way to pull the gunk out before it gets bad lol.

My own cooler drain clogged up so bad last year it looked like a science project in there. I wish I had seen @shah.evan's shop vac tip before I spent an hour with a coat hanger and a lot of regret. That method sounds way smarter and less messy than my usual panic attack approach. I try to check mine monthly now, but weekly is probably the right call if you handle a lot of produce. A little hot water down the line during regular cleaning seems to keep the worst of it from building up.
