The old laminate in that 90s house finally gave out on me

Honestly, it was a 1998 install in a split-level over in Bothell. The locking system just crumbled when I pulled the first board, like dry leaves. Tbh I had to cut out a whole 8x10 section because the tongues were dust. Ended up floating a new vinyl plank right over the subfloor after scraping for two hours. Anyone else run into that era of laminate just disintegrating?

My buddy had that same "crumbled like dry leaves" thing happen in his '96 rambler.

Yeah, read a whole thread on a DIY forum about that exact problem. They called it "brown lock" failure from that time period. The plastic just gets brittle and falls apart.

I mean, my '98 is still fine, maybe it's just a luck thing.
