A homeowner in Phoenix pointed out my floor vents were always crooked

She said it made the whole room look 'unfinished', so now I use a speed square to line them up before cutting. Anyone else have a tiny fix that made a big difference in how a job looks?

My crooked cuts are why I own so many speed squares, lol.

Heard a carpenter say a speed square is the only tool you can't really cheat with. Honestly, that thing shows you the truth whether you want to see it or not.

I read somewhere that speed squares were actually designed by a guy named Albert Swanson back in the 1920s. He was a carpenter who got tired of doing all the math for roof angles. That thing really is just straight honesty though. You can hold it up and see exactly where your cut is off, no fudging it. I've watched guys try to convince themselves a 87 degree cut is "close enough" and the speed square just sits there showing the truth. Its like the tool equivalent of a mirror you can't look away from.
