Looking back at my old 401k rollover choice from 2018

When I left my job in Dallas, I had to pick between rolling my 401k into a new plan or into an IRA with Vanguard. I went with the IRA because the fees were lower, like 0.04% for the index fund. It was a bit of a hassle with the paperwork, but it's grown steadily since then. Anyone else go through this and have tips for someone doing it now?

Man, my main tip is don't lose the paperwork like I almost did.

Heard that, @the_gray! Wasn't there a story about lost forms causing huge delays?

Lost paperwork is basically a rite of passage for rolling over an old 401k at this point. My buddy in Austin had his check sitting in some unclaimed property office for three months because the forms got mailed to the wrong address. That 0.04% expense ratio is nice but it comes with a cost of your sanity waiting for it all to get sorted.
