Update: I went with the $15/yard cotton twill over the $8/yard polyester blend for the cargo pants prototype.

The twill drapes way better and feels more durable, but now I'm worried the final garment price will be too high for the market. Has anyone found a good mid-weight fabric that doesn't break the bank?

Ever notice how everything feels like a choice between cheap junk or stuff you can't afford? You see it with clothes, tools, even groceries. It's getting harder to find that decent middle ground.

Man, that's so true. I bought a cheap drill last year and the chuck fell off in three months. @the_river's fabric tip is smart, but even finding that mid-grade stuff takes serious hunting now. Feels like you either get disposable garbage or have to take out a loan.

What about a cotton-poly canvas? I used a 60/40 blend for work pants last year that held up great. It was around $11 a yard and had a decent hand without being stiff.
