My sister said my designs looked like they were trying too hard to be 'cool'.
We were looking at my sketches for a new streetwear line last week, and she just pointed at a jacket with like five different zippers and pockets and said, 'Who is this for? It looks like you're trying to win a contest for most stuff on a jacket.' It hit me because she's not into fashion at all, she's a nurse. She said the best clothes she owns are the ones that feel easy and make sense. I realized I was adding details just to look like a designer, not to actually solve a problem or make something better to wear. I scrapped three designs that day. Now I'm focusing on one clear idea per piece. Has anyone else had a non-fashion person give you a reality check that actually helped?

Honest question, is it that deep? Sometimes a jacket with five zippers is just a jacket with five zippers. People buy weird stuff all the time. Your sister's a nurse, she needs easy clothes. Streetwear isn't about that. Maybe you just needed to edit some bad designs, which happens to everyone. But taking life advice from someone who wears scrubs every day seems like a stretch.

Look at my closet full of graphic tees from 2012 and tell me I'm qualified to judge anyone's fashion choices. My sister the nurse has seen me leave the house in pajama pants, so her scrubs are a step up in style from my usual look. You're right, I probably just got mad at some ugly zippers and took it out on the whole idea of clothes. Next time I'll ask her for medical advice instead, she's way better at that.
