I used to think pockets on dresses were a design flaw, not a feature.
For years, I'd avoid them, thinking they ruined the line of a garment. Then I saw a woman at the Portland farmers market last fall, hands in the pockets of a simple linen shift, looking completely at ease. It clicked that I was designing for a look, not for how people actually live. Has anyone else had a moment where a 'practical' thing changed their whole design idea?

Yeah, I read a piece on how pockets were once a sign of status, which makes @miller.paul's point even better.

Watched my friend finally add a strap to her favorite bag after dropping her keys for the tenth time. She said it stopped being a purse and started being her partner.
