I used to sketch everything by hand in a Moleskine, now I just use Procreate on my iPad.

For years I carried a sketchbook and a set of Prismacolor pencils, but about 18 months ago I switched to digital for my initial drafts. I got tired of scanning and cleaning up paper sketches for clients in Chicago. Do you think digital tools are killing the 'soul' of a design, or is it just a better workflow?

My old Wacom tablet from 2012 finally gave out, which forced me back to pencil and paper for a week. Honestly, the soul is in the time you spend looking, not the tool. I found myself making the same hesitant lines digitally and physically. The workflow is just cleaner now, so you can spend more time on that looking part.

My 2013 Intuos died last year and I had the same pencil paper phase. I kept a cheap sketchbook by my desk and forced myself to do 30 minute warm ups with just a red pencil. It really did train my eye more than my hand, weirdly.

Remember when we all thought digital art was cheating, and now my biggest creative block is waiting for a software update to finish? I spent so long trying to make my digital lines look "organic" that I forgot to just draw the thing. The soul bit comes from you staring at the empty screen or page and deciding to put a mark on it, the tool just changes how much you curse during the process.
