Can we talk about buying a good dress form early on?
I remember starting out and thinking I could just pin things on myself or use a cheap stand-in. About five years back, I finally dropped around $400 on a solid, adjustable dress form from a local supplier. In my experience, it saved me so much time on fittings and let me see the drape of a garment properly for the first time. Before that, I'd finish a piece and the fit would be off in ways I just couldn't see while working flat. That one tool changed how I approach structure and tailoring completely. Has anyone else found a specific piece of equipment that made that big a difference in their process?

A good iron was my game changer.

A steamer works much better for most fabrics.

My old Rowenta iron gets cotton dress shirts perfectly flat in two passes. Steamers just don't give you that sharp crease on trousers or crisp collar. For heavy fabrics like denim or linen, the direct heat and pressure are what really works. A steamer is fine for quick refreshes, but it doesn't actually press anything.
