A senior pattern cutter at a local workshop made me rethink everything about draping

I was at this small textile studio in Austin last month, working on a bodice pattern that just wouldn't sit right on the mannequin. An older woman named Clara walked over and pointed at my shoulder seam, said 'you're fighting the grain, honey.' She showed me how rotating the pattern 15 degrees changed the whole hang of the fabric, like magic. It stuck with me because I spent 3 years in design school and nobody ever broke it down that simply. Now I can't unsee how many beginners are making the same mistake (including me, for way too long). Has anyone else had a random encounter with an experienced designer that totally shifted your approach to construction?

Rotated a dart 20 degrees once. Solved everything. Grain direction is law.

Honestly though, if you're relying on grain direction that hard, sounds like your pattern drafting is a bit off from the start.
